Ice, Flavor & Craftsmanship: Why Is Rosin So Hyped?

If you’ve noticed more and more little jars of concentrate showing up in dispensary refrigerators, there’s a good chance you’re looking at rosin or live rosin.

Once considered a niche, premium product, rosin has quickly become one of the most talked about cannabis concentrates on the market. But what makes rosin so special? Bored n Buzzed will tell you exactly why.

To understand the hype you first need to know what it is. Rosin is a solventless cannabis concentrate made by separating the resin-rich trichomes from cannabis using ice water and then applying heat and pressure to extract the oils inside.

Trichomes are the tiny, frosty glands that cover the flower and make your best weed look sparkly. They contain most of the cannabinoids and terpenes that give cannabis its effects, aroma, and flavor.

Unlike many other extraction methods, solventless extraction doesn't use hydrocarbons or other chemical solvents to pull those trichomes from the plant. Meaning it’s a chemical free process!  

So how does it work?

The process starts with freshly harvested cannabis that is frozen immediately after harvest using dry ice. Freezing the bud preserves the terpenes and cannabinoids locking in its smell and flavor.

The frozen flower is combined with ice and cold water and gently agitated. The cold temperatures from the ice water make the trichomes brittle, allowing them to easily separate from the plant material. 

The mixture is then filtered through specialized micron bags to collect the trichomes and leave behind the frozen bud. After the water is removed through freeze-drying, you are left with bubble hash. This process is known as “washing.”

But we're missing a key part of what makes rosin, rosin. The pressure. 

The bubble hash is put into a filter bag and placed on a rosin press. A small hydraulic or pneumatic press with heated surfaces. With a little bit of heat and hundreds of pounds the oils of the trichomes are squeezed out of the hash. What comes out is a sticky, flavorful concentrate known as rosin. That last step is referred to as “pressing.”

The combination of ice, pressure, and carefully controlled heat is what gives rosin its signature texture and flavor.

So that’s it? Where’d the hype come from?

The hype around rosin isn't just a trend. There are multiple reasons consumers have become obsessed with it. Take a look:

Flavor. Rosin is prized for its rich terpene profile and its ability to be a true-to-strain representation of the flower’s terpene profile showcasing the original characteristic of the strain.

Craftsmanship. Making great rosin is as much a skill as it is a process. Genetics, freezing, washing, drying, pressing and curing can all affect the final product. Attention to detail is a priority for making high quality hash rosin.

Solventless extraction. Rosin is made without hydrocarbon solvents, which is a major part of its appeal for consumers looking for slightly cleaner concentrate options.

Small-batch production. High-quality rosin can be difficult and pricey to produce at scale. Turning certain genetics and collaborations into limited batches and unique drops. Reducing supply and increasing the demand.

But is hash rosin really worth the price? That's up to you.

Rosin tends to cost more because the process is labor-intensive, the starting material can be expensive, and producing consistently high-quality products requires expertise and specialized equipment.

For some, the combination of flavor, potency, craftsmanship, and solventless extraction makes the premium worth it. For others, the price difference doesn't justify the quality difference.
